Skype is a phone service through a computer with a broadband connection. Any computer can be used. You only need a special phone and the software which is downloadable from http://www.skype.com . The calls are free to anywhere in the world as long as that user has Skype too. With the phone, you get a real phone number so you can call land lines and cell phones as well.

Skype is similar to the Voice service (nearly) every Messenger service offers nowadays; and unless you have very specific needs and corresponding hardware, you may as well stay with the messenger (most of) your friends use too;

NEEDED
broadband Internet connection (ADSL or Cable)
(nota bene: in some countries, Internet (ADSL or Cable) providers offer VOIP services with very low or even FREE calls to landlines (in the same country); Skype's call are only free to call another Skype user ON HIS/HER PC (!)); calls to landlines are charged, even though at very low rates) real strength of Skype is INTERNATIONAL calls, for which the rates are very attractive.

Skype is a program that you can chat on and send files, and talk to strangers with a phone. Or you can have skypeout and put money in your account to call places all over the world for cheaper than it would be to call them from home or your cellphone.

almost any computer, from a 486, up, works.

They want you to use at least a 200 mhz, for their crappy software.

If you run Linux, it has better software included, FREE, and, it is 50X faster, so it works for voice and phone just fine...!!!

You will still need the voice modem, but, some of us use a modem with 'talk' (actually, sound) built in... saves the $100.00!
