Need to make a quick decision - as in survival mechanism - good - bad , dangerous - safe but these days it is not so necessary, still the instinct remains.
Also trying to put 'the world in order' in your own mind - need to put people into categories that is why sometimes people judge too quiclky based on a previous bad experience or parents teaching...

If they don't take their opinion of people seriously then neither should you. Most of the time they are just venting. It can also be a good indication of their personality, like a big flag saying I'm an idiot. Try asking a religious question and see all the assumptions that are made about you. It's quite funny.

Because that is how we are hard wired. We look at people make assumptions and then test them out. Or some people just go with the assumptions and never test them out. They are called bigots.
How do you think we made it this far in the universe with out doing something similar.

You're exactly the sort of person who would ask a question like that !
I'm kidding of course .
-Why look at what's in front of you when you can stay 'safe' behind your prejudices ? People are so caught up in their thoughts ,generally ,that they can no longer tell what is a belief or name ,and what is actually there .

of course. unfortunately. outer appearances are the first thing people see, judgement gets made on past experiences, what they've been told etc. Just human nature- we take in stimuli and brain interprets it whether we like it or not. Everyone does it, some people just ignore their prejudice.

sad but true, happens all the time, don't know why too! now that we asked the question, means that we WILL NOT do that, right? wish more people will think and do likewise and the world will be a better place to share and live in.

because sometimes you CAN read a book by its cover. for exmple, look at the tabloids. i see from the cover that its crap and i dont want anything to do with them.
it saves most of us time and energy. if our first impression of a person is bad, then usually so will the rest of them. we just dont want to have to waste time getting to know a person if they're a jerk or something.
