To them it is not blasphemis as they do not believe in a god.
Saying it actually has no meaning.
But we must always be considerate towards other religions, cultures or believes.
Therefor, eventhough it's not blasphemis as such, it is still offensive towards people who are religous, and we must always be considerate, kind and non offencive towards others, despite their believes.
Thats why I as an agnost do not use any religous term in a negative or offensive way, and I hope others do likewise out of respect for their fellow humanbeings.

It's a cultural norm. Nothing more, nothing less.

The cut and the shut of it is that an atheist doesn't give two hoots if what he says constitutes blasphemy or not - it's an irrelevance.

And why should blasphemy offend others? The truly religious will understand that it is a matter between the blasphemous and God, and they need to simply keep their own house in order. It is not for them to judge or condemn blasphemers - that much is, well, Biblical :o)

I have been a practicing Athiest for over 50 years, but that doesn't stop me from using blasphemous remarks... or outright cussing, either...

Just because I use God's name in vain doesn't mean I believe in him/her, but it's just more convenient than evoking Yahweh or Allah... besides... the Arabs use very colorful Curse Phrases than I find a bit too unweildly for my anglosized tongue.

If they use the Lord's name, they are invoking something which they deny exists. Therefore, consciously, they deny there is a God, but subconsciously they actually do. Is it blasphemous? Not really. To be blasphemous they would have to consciously be saying His name in vain and believe in Him. Since they are not aware they believe, it is not blasphemy.

How can you even bring God into a commentary about semantics and the popular use of language?
Without any intention to offend you, because I fully respect and defend your freedoms and rights, this matter can become obsessive; not unlike other obsessions, for example, such as those rather warped souls who obsess on porn. Please do not raise your ire about the semantics I use. I'm simply trying to point out the basis of my position that there is nothing at all inter linking God which my choice to use an obscenity.

They can say what they like as they don't believe in a higher power or repercussions from said higher power. They believe that when we die there is nothing. The body just dies. They are not evil, not the devil (they don't believe there is a devil) and they are very intelligent people if you ever get the chance to speak to one. Christian authority figures have tried to make athiests look like devil worshippers because they don't believe in the Christian god. They're not. They're just normal people who don't buy into religion.

i have seen an atheists hit his thumb with a hammer....he then mentioned the creator several times. i think most 'atheists' people believe in a creator or higher being, just not the conventional 'God'. don't worry about them being blasphemous. few people know God's name to use it in vain.

'god', 'lord', and 'blasphemy' all come as a group for believers and non.

a non blaspemous thing can be said by one person, and heard as a completely blaspemous thing by another.

for atheists, that a person believes in only one version of god to the exclusion of others can come accross as quite blaspemous and intellectually lazy
