I often see the out of work youngster, not much money, just able to give thier parents a little towards the bills, but 9/10 always seem to manage to carry a mobile phone , surley the first thing to go is the phone, there are plenty of phone boxes about...
do you think the same as me or is a mobile a matter of life and death ???

I think the main argument is that people seem to put to much emphasis on unimportant things, I agree that a phone is a wonderful thing, but you have to get your priorities right, in the days of no mobiles did the world come to an end, no we survived, and as for the person saying a child who is out of work and they wouldn't expect a penny, how then is the person going to realise the value of money, you get the luxury's when you earn them............... as for a coulour tv if you can't afford a license then you should not own one ...fact of life

How do you know these kids are out of work do you go up to them and ask? even so come the end of the day its up to them how they spend thier money, who says they havent paid thier parents some money. ?
Judging books by thier covers is a dangerous thing. Alot of these phones come with a bunch of free txts per month cheaper way to keep intouch with thier friends and save thier parents bills surely?
Phones these days have become an integral part of every day life and while I understand what you mean about the important things in life. I think we live in a democratic society where we all have the right to choose what or what we dont have in our lives and what we class as important. And no Im not out of work nor am I young, and the only mobile phone I have had is work provided, personally I prefer not having one.

Having a cellphone is more convenient than finding a phone booth, because with a cellphone, you can contact anyone anywhere (people at home with landlines and people on the go with cellphones). It's also useful for emergencies. In my country, it has become more of a necessity than a fashion accessory. There are lots of affordable phones that offer basic features. As long as you can call and send text messages, you're good to go. You don't have to own a fancy phone just to stay connected. It really depends on people's priorities and personal choices on what they're using a cellphone for - a music player, a connectivity device, etc.

I have often thought that. I see these 'fly on the wall' programmes about so called poverty in the UK, yet, when it shows their houses, they all have nice modern TVs PCs in the corner of the room, DVD players and row upon row of DVD, and yes, the mobile telephone. Now, if they have a PC with Internet, then they have a telephone line, so isn't it cheaper to sue a landline to chat on the phone? Basic economics, or is it the fact they know they can get easy money from the DSS loans etc to get them out the doo doo when they can't afford it.
I was a single parent for a while many years ago, I didn't claim, I got off my **** and worked to pay my rent and to look after my kids and I went without things until I had enough money to pay for them, its simple, nothing extravagant and nothing on credit

I agree completely, but... it does depend on what kind of work they intend to get, since companies assume that most people (even unemployed) have a mobile phone and some jobs require you to have one.
I won't ever have one if I can at all avoid it, I would find it an intrusion to my privacy and a drain on my wallet. I don't smoke, don't drink, and don't have a mobile phone... some might think that makes me rich, and compared to some it may be true, but I find other more worthwhile ways to spend the money!

There are many youths that are out of work and don't intend working for a living that smoke and have mobile phones and a can of beer in their hand. Usually their parents have never worked so they don't know any different.

When I was a youngster, my parents only once asked me to help with household bills. Now that I am paying money we don't have, to keep my family housed, and warm, I regret that I didn't try to do more for my parents.

well - as of right now, if i don't have my phone - i freak out. i feel uncomfortable. however, people have survived without it so i guess it shouldnt be a big deal.
but im not an out of work youngster, im a married mom, so maybe that makes a difference...
I do see your point though...

some folk have them in case of emergency's. i know if my son was out of work i wouldn't want money for bills from him I'd tell him to put it in his phone that way if something comes up he would always be able to get in contact with me
