These are pretty straightforward. But only *after* you see how to 'think' about the problem and set it up in algebraic terms.
(1)
Call the number of apples x (Why the apples, there are fewer of them than anything else ) Then
x = number of apples
3x = number of pears (thrice the number of apples)
2*(3x) = number of oranges (twice the number of pears)
so
x +3x + 6x = 960 => 10x = 960 => x = 96 = # of apples
then
3*96 = 288 = # of pears
2*288 = 576 = # of oranges
check
96 + 288 + 576 = 960 Yup
(2)
This is just a variation of (1)
Let the mango's mass be x, then
x = mass of mango
2x = mass of papaya
3*(2x) = mass of durian
and
x + 2x + 6x = 4.473 => 9x = 4.473 => x = .497kg or 497g
2*.497 = .994 kg (mass of papaya)
3*.994 = 2.982kg (mass of durian
check
.497 + .994 + 2.982 = 4.473 Yup
(3)
Again, start with the smallest.
x = height of the stick
2x = height of the pole (twice the length of the stick)
4*(2x) = height of ladder (four times the length of the pole)
and the problem tells us that
4*(2x) - x = 56 meters
so
8x - x = 57 => 7x = 56 => x = 8
so 8m = height of the stick
2*8 = 16 = height of pole
4*16 = 64 = height of ladder
check
64 - 8 = 56 Yup
Now........ Don't just glance at this and say, "That's Kewl" and go back to watching TV. Actually *study* what was done and why so that you understand it. Why? Because I won't be there to take your math tests for you
BTW, that is one *helluva* tall ladder. Be careful not to fall off of it

1).
Given
x = Apples
3x = Pears
2(3x) = Oranges
960 = total amount of Apples, Pears and Oranges
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The formula;
x + 3x + 2(3x) = 960
x + 3x + 6x = 960
10x = 960
10x/10 = 960/10
Divide both sides by 10
x = 96
Insert 96 into the formula
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
96 + 3(96) + 2[3(96)] = 960
96 + 288 + 2[288] = 960
96 + 288 + 576 = 960
960 = 960
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
There are:
96 Apples
288 Pears
576 Oranges
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
2).
Given
x = Mangos
2x = Papayas
3(2x) = Durian's
Total Mass = 4.473 kg
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The formula
x + 2x + 3(2x) = 4.473
9x = 4.473
9x/9 = 4.473/9
Dividing both sides by 9
x = 0.497 kg
Insert 0.497 into the formula
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
0.497 + 2(0.497) + 3[2(0.497)] = 4.473
0.497 + 0.994 + 3[0,994] = 4.473
0,497 + 0.994 + 2.982 = 4.473
4.473 = 4.473
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Mass of the mangos = 0,497 kg
Mass of the papayas = 0.994 kg
Mass of durians = 2.982kg

1. x = apples; 3x = pears; 6x = oranges
x + 3x + 6x = 960
10x = 960
x = 96
There are 6*96 = 576 oranges and 3*96 = 288 pears.
576 - 288 = 288 There are 288 more oranges than pears.
2. x = mass of mango; 2x = mass of papaya; 6x = mass of durian
x + 2x + 6x = 4.473
9x = 4.473
x = 0.497
The mango's mass is 0.497 kg (497 g) and the durian's mass is 6*0.497 = 2.982 kg. Their combined (total) mass is 3.479 kg.
3. x = height of bamboo stick; 2x = height of wooden pole; 8x = height of ladder
8x - x = 56
7x = 56
x = 8
The ladder is 8*8 = 64 meters tall, and the wooden pole is 2*8 = 16 meters tall. The combined (total) height of the two is 80 meters.
