I am starting uni next month to study graphic design. I have been told by a few people that getting an apple mac is far better than using a normal pc as it is what is used by most of the graphics world. Since then I have been asking for advice as to what apple mac I should get, and I have since got different responces. Some have said that a pc would be better as an apple mac would cause a lot of problems. I am a bit stressed as I want to be prepared for when I start uni, and not have to start looking for something after I have started as it will be quite a hectic time as it is. Can anyone advise me please.

Well alot depends on your budget obviously but both platforms are viable and both have their faults. In regards to security, WindowsXP does have many problems although Service Pack 2 fixed many, it also may have created the biggest security hole if you use the Microsoft firewall.

Advantage to PC: Hardware cost and wide availability of software. Also, no matter how much the Apple loyals hate it, a PC will out-pace any Apple any day and the advantage to PC is going to grow. I was on the Amiga platform, so I realize the loyalty of the Apple users (and admire it) and there is and has been a ton of graphics software (Vector and Raster) for years on the Apple, but it has been weak on the 3D end.

Again: probably the biggest factor is cost, and not just in the purchase but the in upgradability and in getting software locally (not a big issue) but another to consider. Also, since almost all the Apple and Amiga programs have been ported over to PC...thats a big plus.

But you know this advice is probably same as so much you will have already heard= id recommend emailing your course instructor and asking their opinion, see what systems you will be learning on etc. Or if possible see if you can email some older students - who will give the best advice of all, having been through what your about to go through. good luck xxx

99% of Professional designers use Macs. Period. As do most printers & service bureaus.

Macs dont get viruses. Ever!

Most design software (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) run native on the Mac OS.

Not sure what problems your friend was talking about. I've used Macs AND PCs since the early 80s. Only problems I can see is that some applications you may be used to may not work on a Mac.

Mac was first that is used in the average DTP (desktop publishing) due to its power. For that reason the many of graphic programs are developed for MAC.
In these time apple have a very powerfull computers compared with PC Windows/DOS have also some programs simple for calculate or to insert text. But now the situation it is changed and due to less price of the PC its begginn to gain also in the field of DTP
Adds this do to the popularity of windows manny companies are develop a low cost alternatives of the traditionally MAC programs like Adobe - that have also a very mature suite for windows.
It is posible to find more third party software and plugins for Windows than for Mac
Due to this Apple do many changes in it commercial politics - the dual-core processors that support aso Windows and Mac etc But the question is what I can do with a speciifc programs: And a program is good - if it is manipulated by good programmer or an advanced user.
sometime with the free program like GIMP or Inskape (originally from Linux now portated also in windows) a taleted and creative person can make a great things.

obvisously a mac, there is one for every budget.
your local apple reseller is usually expensive
go online, do research at apple, then look for lower prices at places like mac warehouse, insight etc.

mac are more robust that pcs, and are designed with designers in mind.
pcs are designed for office work etc although you can get the same software for both now.

if you are in graphics for the long haul, spend the money and get a decent mac, it will probably last you for the next 10 yrs
whereas a pc is either out of date or it'll be too slow in a couple of months of using

If you make the grade, you will most likely need to be able to use a Mac before you can get a job in a design environment.

Another point is Mac's color management, which is far more advanced than PC's and that's a must in designing.

Check out the jobs that you'll want to apply for when you graduate and see what they want you to be familiar with!
Most places use Macs as far as I know, they are more expensive initially but you don't get into the constant ratrace to upgrade.
