I've read a lot of answers that mention eating fruits and veggies. While this is good advice, these foods are not a source of B vitamins. The B-complex is found primarily in liver, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, wheat germ, molasses, beans, and brewer's yeast. Now, raise your hand if you eat liver...whole grain breads, cereals and pasta...spinach...ok, I thought so.
So-called "enriched" breads only put back a fraction of the B that was milled out of them. Freezing depletes about 1/3 of a food's B vitamins. Canning is even worse. Bs are water-soluble, meaning the body does not store them from day to day. Medication, coffee, alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, food coloring and antihistamines all deplete our body of Bs. Consequently, most Americans are deficient in B vitamins. Yet, except for a few deficiency diseases like spina bifida (neural tube defect) in newborns, deficiencies go unnoticed. But the B-complex is vital in the body's functioning, especially the nervous system. Every cell in the body depends on B vitamins.
So there's the good, in brief. The bad? It's impossible to find a balanced B-complex supplement. For example, the body needs 500 parts more of cholin and inositol for every B1, B2 and B6 - yet no supplement I've seen even contains these! An excess of one B creates a deficiency of the others. See the problem?
I've created my own B supplement formula which I won't itemize here because I am a self-taught nutritionist, not licensed. But this website will help you to make some choices:

B-Complex - often called The Happy Food - feeds the nerves and has a profound effect on mental and emotional stability. The folic acid contained in B-Complex is vital to the delivery of a healthy baby. Recent finds show the important role B vitamins play in a healthy cardiovascular system. B-Complex helps with:
anti-stress, PMS, reduces craving of chocolate, caffeine, and sugar; headaches; converts carbohydrates, fats & protein into energy; healthy hair, skin and nails.
It is important to take the B in a complex form however and one that is formulated for easy absorption.
Stress, medications, sugars and alcohol all rob the body of B vitamins.
This may sound a bit gross but an easy way to see if your body has a good supply of B is that your urine will be bright yellow - like the color of a yellow legal pad.
I take Shaklee's B-Complex - they've developed a way for the body to easily absorb the folic acid by actually somehow incapsulating it into the outside coating of the pill. The biggest change I've noticed since adding this supplement is NO MORE HEADACHES!!

There is a brilliant little supplement called "AB Calm". It's a completely natural freeze dried calcium/magnesium drink mix that comes in little packets. You mix it into hot water, and drink it before bed. It's primary purpose is to help with leg cramps, but it definitely helps with sleep and anxiety. Vitamin B is good for any kind of stress and works best when taken with Vitamin C. Anxiety can also be due to a chromium deficiency. My doctor recommend chromium picolonate in addition to the above mentioned supplements and my anxiety was reduced by 80 to 90% over a period of two weeks. Hope this helps :)

Based on personal experience, taking vitamin B complex supplements peps me up where i feel more energetic and able to work more. However, you have a tendency to feel 'heaty' in the sense you may have more pimples outbreak. The solution to this is that you need to drink plenty of water if you're taking vitamin B complex supplements. :D

Vitamin B group are water soluable so it is expelled relatively quickly from the body when taken in excess. taking more than you would use only results in an expensive visit to the toilet for a lovely bright yellow pee! You would need to take a radically high and prolonged dose to do yourself harm at which point your kidneys would be suffering, but nobody does that that I can recall anyway.

Good: If you're deficient in one of the B vitamins, it should help. Also, it might make mosquitoes leave you alone.
Bad: If your supplements aren't in balance (i.e. if you take B vitamins and nothing else) you could cause deficiencies of other nutrients. Also, B vitamins make you STINK (probably why the mosquitoes bite less).

If you eat properly: a variety of vegetables and fruit everyday
and at least 7 portions (one portion is about equal to the size of your fist) you dont need to take extra vitamins. If you are a vegan however I would suggest B12.
