this depend of your linux option and distribution
choose what you want and go to the linux specific site
for example (debian very stable, redHat mandrake, fedore Cora, ubuntu Xandrox, etc)
Generally it say that it is more stable and no so vulnerable (it isnot so popular:)
have also the very differend construction architeture - but this it other subject. i belive that it is an ideal choice for a server.
And it is free - the major advantage for a end user
also you have graet aplications like open office org or Gimp -free(but no they have also windows version - you can try it of windows if you want)
and if you search the net you can find many free application for the windows too.
exist also an aplication called Wine that permit you to run windows application on the linux system but it have some instabilities
(the comercial program for doing this it is called cross over platform)
Anothe idea based on the above answer
IF you want to see a very small but pretty d linux distribution
you can try small damn Linux (only 50 MB)

Answer to your particular question

Well always I try to answer the best it is possible but my information can substitute billions of page that are on the web
1. Make a new partition on your system and install Linux on it (majority of Linux distribution doing this automatically but search more about this feature for the specific that you want to choose )
and try to learn it
if you want to do the particion manually I recommend partition magic
http://www.partitionmagic.com
Precaution:
Before install Linux on the new partition on the same machine with Windows –back –up all your important data !

Always is useful to know something more
But if you want to became specialist it is necessary to attend some courses and extend your knowledge
Maintain Windows with its own partition.
This is my case - now I uninstall it but i used Linux Mandrake after a research of the market
Now I note that ubuntu it is very popular
It have many distribution for various need and many others are "ubuntu affiliated"
See http://www.ubuntu.com/download/derivatives
Just now I'm trying-Guadalinex a Spanish derivative from ubuntu
I'm Romanian and majority of my software it is in English -due to this , because I love also Spanish I try to have more software in this language.
2. If you have 2 computers install linux of one of them -recommended on the "weak" one Linux ask for few resources than Windows.
3.use a virtual computer - install a program like
Vmware workstation http/www.vmware.com
and run Linux - aliitle complicated option read carrefully the documentation - it is not prerable for you at this moment, I guess
What you want from Linux- stability, multimedia, games, free special programs -search on the web for a specific required that you want. Visit forus, email a supporting teams
If you want more information about linux and why Linux?
you could read this:
http://www.seul.org/docs/whylinux.html
http://www.linux.org/info/advocacy.html
http://www.linux.org/dist/download_info.html
But I underlined again- for migrating to linux it is important your need and your temperament too (my case)

Sincerely,
Anna

Thousands!!!!!.... GAMES!!! http://transgaming.org/gamesdb has 1,500 Microsoft games that run in Linux, about 50X FASTER!!!

Linux lets you run 20 desktops, with up to 200 open windows in each desktop!

Linux can boot and run any X86 system! From a Live CDrom, or a pair of Floppies!!! OR, from a mini-cd, OR, from a USB stick, OR from any External drive!!! OR, from the network!!! There's more...

Linux will run 10,524 processors in parallel! (Sandia National Laboratories).

Linux can read any filesystem, restore hard drives, fix any Microsoft windoze, change the passwords, from a LiveCDrom! http://knopper.net/knoppix and "Knoppix Hacks and 100 tips", by Kyle Rankin, O'Reilly Books, on sale at http://amazon.com in the USED books (it's NEW, with LiveCDrom, for $8.00!!!)

Linux has true 64 bit applications, on 64 bit OSes, developed and proven in the Corporate Enterprise, since 1994. Microsoft has had one 'demo' issue of XP, that has no 64 bit applications! AND, the 32 bit Windows apps bring over their 150,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions!!!

Linux launches all NASA flights, and, the Shuttle, and Mars Rovers, since 1993. On clusters!

NOAA gives you all the weather maps, on your TV, using Linux clusters!

ALL the movies of Hollywood studios, since "Titanic - 1997", have been rendered, made, enhanced, animated, restored, in Linux Clusters!!!

Linux includes over 119,000 FREE and OPEN programs, games, applications, suites, browsers, desktop environments, scientific training and development programs... http://sourceforge.net

So good, that Microsoft.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com EACH run 15,000 Linux computers!!! Google, on 100,000 Linux computers, clustered, too!

Linux is a Unix Clone, virus proof, hacker free. Mac OS X is a version of Darwin BSD, another Unix Clone. They share many programs, applications... yahoo.com runs entirely on BSD!

http://livecdlist.com has 309 versions. FREE DLs.
http://distrowatch.com has 500 FREE DLs.

My favorite for ease of use, comes with 5,000 games, programs, http://pclinuxos.com Run this LIVE, with out installing, until you see that you like it. THEN, you can click on the Install icon!

For newbies, I like to put it on a SECOND hard drive by itself, that is 4Gb or larger. You can dual boot that way, while you learn to execute Windows stuff in WINE, DOSEMU, VMWare environments.

Join Microsoft, and other really SMART corporations, in fact, Burger King, and the entire Fortune 1,000 corporations, plus, 165 World Governments, in the switch to GNU/LINUX!!!
