There are so many subtle differences and so many poisonous ones. I would never try to pick a wild one, identify it and eat it.

It is difficult to judge for a novice, but almost all brightly coloured mushrooms are poisonous. When collecting from the wild, look out for the mushrooms that the indigenous tribes eat-by that way you will be sure that the mushroom is not poisonous. Also when eating wild mushroom, do not consume uncooked material-also do not eat a stomach full. It is always wise to keep a sample in the fridge so that if you get sick, the mushroom can be identified and a medical practitioner can give you a perfect antidote.
Also you can see the website listed in my source which has some very useful information with photographs.

It is very difficult to identify wild mushroom species. There are similar looking mushrooms that have widely diverse effects. It is not wise to eat wild-picked mushrooms unless a trained and experienced person is with you. There is NO way to tell if a mushroom is toxic or edible by looking at the color, size, shape, spore color, texture, odor, location, etc., etc. And, a mushroom is a fungus. It is just in a different group from molds and yeasts. Be VERY careful. There are deaths every year due to ingestion of toxic mushrooms. Nine people died in Mexico less than 10 days ago from mushroom poisoning.

If you are not an expert, don't guess. Find an expert. Some mushrooms are VERY dangerous and have no antidote if eaten. Be careful.

There's two ways to know for sure:
Eat one you find in the woods.
If you don't die or get verrry sick it was a mushroom.
If you do die, it was a poisonous fungus.
Or -
Buy them in a market and you'll know that they are for sure mushrooms.
In all seriousness, DO NOT EAT FUNGUS YOU FIND IN THE WILD, that's courting serious illness or death.
