Sometimes they are cicadas - or 17-year locusts, or other such bugs that attact mates by rubbing their wings together or scraping a rough leg over another body part. Sometimes it's the power lines above, too - they often have frayed insulation and let sparks arc from line to line and it sounds just like the bugs. Always on those hot days, when you memory turns to air still and heavy, the horizon shimmering, and dustry lanes that seem to go nowhere - and there's just no moving. Grab some lemonade, find a shady place, and let your mind be carried off by that hypnotic sound ....

The loud insects are cicadas, or commonly and incorrectly called cicadas. They hatch anywhere from three to 17 years, depending on the species. They spend most of their time underground near trees, where the eggs are laid. When they hatch, they shed their outer layers, climb the trees, and make their noise as a mating call. I rather like the sound on a warm summer evening. Also, they are quite harmless.

i think it is spelled chicatas...they are the ones they shed there skin, and you can find stuck to tree's. small greyish brown bugs, sorta in the style of an armadillo i guess is how i would describe it.
