I think i can help.
Secondary data can help or guide the researcher in searching for or selcting a better research problem; hence a replication of a similar problem may be made using a different locale or a different set of respondents. Note that replication is not the same as duplication.
Secondary data can also ensure that there is no duplication of an investigation already made. It also helps in the formulation of specific questions, assumptions, framework, methods, sampling techniques, impications, and conclusions.
Secondary data may also be used to verify the researcher's own findings.
As for the disadvantages of secondary data, there is very littlle unless the reliability of the data is questionable. Avoid tertiary data as much as possible in research.
On the other hand, primary data enables the researcher to formulate generalizations about his/her set of respondents; some primary data can, in fact, be used for predictions (particularyly if these are from correlation studies). Primary data reveals problems for which timely remedial measures may be instituted.
Some disadvantages of primary data would be the limitations of such (e.g. only conditions and practices present during the conduct of research are considered); some extraneous variables may also be beyond the researcher's control. Plus, if the researcher is using a survey or some other instrument to gather data, this may lack validity, reliability or adequacy thus rendering the findings questionable. Above all, primary data equates to cost.
However, keep in mind that in research primary data is better than secondary data.
Hope that helped.

Do you mean primary and secondary memory? If so then I assume we're talking about RAM (primary) and non-volatile (secondary) memory. The advantage of Primary is that it is fast (enough to feed processor instructions) The disadvantage is that it needs to have a constant supply of current, so when you turn the computer off you lose everything (volatile). The advantage of secondary storage (namely a hard drive) is that it will retain data when powered off. The disadvantage of secondary storage is that it is much slower than primary memory. When a computer is "loading" it is basically copying files and instructions from the hard drive into RAM so that once done, it can run quickly.

For some purposes, primary data is very much advantageous compared to secondary data. Primary data consist of raw data that may be processed and analyzed to become secondary data. But Secondary data, however, is also useful because it has already been processed. The point is, you can derive your own set of secondary data from your raw/primary data.

Primary data is tailored to your specific needs. By customizing tried-and-true approaches -- focus groups, surveys, field tests, interviews or observation or any specific method you consider best -- you can gain information about your research problem. rimary data is more specific results than secondary and is usually based on statistical methodologies that involve sampling. But primary data collection can be pricey.
Secondary data is based on information gleaned from studies previously performed by government agencies, chambers of commerce, trade associations and other organizations. This includes Census Bureau information and Nielsen ratings or any source other than you.You can find much of this kind of information in local libraries or on the Web, but books and trade publications, as well as electronic databases, magazines and newspapers, are also great sources.
Although secondary data is less expensive than primary, it's not as accurate, or as useful, as specific as primary. The reliability of secondary data is not always assured.

With primary data you are getting direct source info.
With secondary data you are getting the direct source info filtered through the world view of whomever is reporting it.
