If you are talking about digital images, like in a word program, then it means that the word file saves the picture all in the program. Where as non-embedded images, like in After Effects or video editing software, the pictures are referenced. They do this because those programs would just have massive file sizes if it was all embedded. Also if that file went bad then you would lose all those files.
