Why is it when someone breaks up with, or isn't interested in someone (mainly men do this), they always tell the rejected one not to take it personally? It is personal, so why shouldn't that person take it personally? No matter what you say it's still going to hurt the other person's feelings, so then it's personal...isn't it?

They mean that it is not a form of hate by saying that.
It is a kind way of saying tht you are a nice person but that you are not what they consider dating material.
There is no way to really not hurt someone that asks you out and you deny them.
One just has to minimize the damage as best as one can.

Of course it is personal. I think when one wants out of a relationship, that is enough said. Anything else is just gonna prove problematic. The other one that gets me is "I'd do anything for you..." but they're leaving or hurting you. I'm so glad the crazy days with wishy washy guys are over! It's all personal. Good Q!

Yes, it would be personal in that sense. However, what they mean is.....the break up is not due to they don't like who you are, it is that they have changed, are seeing things differently, taking a different path in life etc. In other words, that person does not see you bothwalking the same path anymore.

It is a way to redeem themselves after having rejected someone. It's also a poor attempt to damp the feelings of the rejected.

It's just one of those things you say. Like how's it going, when you just run into someone and nobody really cares about the answer. It's a weenie excuse and I never say it. Of course it's personal, but that phrase is just part of the break up vocabulary, like it's not you, it's me.

Mainly men do this??? Obviously you haven't been out with many women...so before making a blanket statement go out with a half a dozen or so and get personal.

Maybe you have too many boyfriends and break up with them easily.
