Algebra is very easy once you get used to it. It is lke riding a bike. Once you learn it you will never forget it unless you then have a physical problem or in the case of algebra you develop mental problems. When i learned algebra founnd it quite interesting with all the patterns and areas or equations seem like they are a mathematical coincendence but when you work it out it is very logical.

Algebra is very easy. We all started learning algebra in the first grade.

When the teacher wrote on the Board ...

1 + 1 = ?

That was an algebra problem. The variable is the "?" and you are solving for ?.

As you progressed in your education and you actually took a class called Algebra, the "?" was replaced by an "x" or a "y", and placed somewhere else in the equation instead of at the end, like this:

1 + x = 2

But as you can see, it is exactly the same problem. Don't let algebra scare you. It's nothing more than the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division you learned in grade school. The difference is only that the variables are in unfamiliar places.

Personally, I found it easy to learn algebra, but in teaching it there are a lot of students who struggle with it.

I've found that a lot of students who have difficulty with algebra have a much easier time learning geometry, and vice versa. This, I believe, is because the two subjects are pretty much opposites in the style of problems... algebra starts with a great big equation and the student has to whittle it down to a small answer, where geometry starts with a little statement and the student has to expand it to a larger proof. Who would be better at which type of math depends on whether one's strength lies in inductive versus deductive reasoning.

It seem really wied to start with but its useful and easy when you understand it. Don't think x and y, think apples or DVDs, you know something you like to deal with. If I get paid $17 an hour then how much will I get paid for a 40 hr week. 17*40, that simple enough isn't it. Now, what if I get a pay rise to 17.50. Pay rate = x. Hrs in a working week = y. What you will get is always x*y.
Algebra gives you a relationship between figures. The numbers change but the relationship is constant.
If you work in spread sheets, you can see how the columns can have different values - A and B but the formula, in column C, can just be copied right down. Always =A*B

In middle school Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 I didn't do too well and hated it. Then in high school I got an awesome math teacher, Ms. Arthur, and she made me love it because she made it so easy. That was for Algebra II . In college I had some pretty good professors too and they made me like it. I think you have to look at math like a game, when you get the answer you've won!But before I hated it.

Algebra is quite easy for me... It can be easy for you too if you really understand the subject be interested in it and always listen to your teacher explanation. There are some parts in Algebra that is kind of complicated, that is why you have to really pay attention and do a lot of practices regarding on that matter.......

You have to remember that algebra really isn't much more than a 'shorthand' way of symbolically writing down relationships between various 'things' (usually numbers) along with a set of rules for manipulating those symbolic relationships (which are really nothing more than the 'laws' of arithmetic expressed in symbolic form).

The real value of algebra is that it allows us to think about things in a very abstract way and to concentrate on the relationships between things rather than the things themselves.

(The above refers to 'classical' algebra. 'Modern' algebra is something else entirely and concentrates on 'structures' such as groups, fields, rings, etc. and the relationships between them)

I, personally, never had any problems at all with math. It's always been like a very fun 'game' to me. Why is that? Why do people like me love it and others hate it? I'll be damned if I know. Is it genetic? Nobody else in my family (on either side for a couple of generations back) really 'liked' math the way I do. A couple of them were fairly good at it but they saw it as a 'necessary evil' in order to do what they really liked.

My advice is simply this: If you like math and seem to be fairly good at it, go for it. If not, don't beat yourself up too badly. Not being terribly good at math does *not* make you a bad person. (Fact is, I sucked in History ) Take as much as you have to to get to where you want to be, study hard, work lots of problems, and get through it as best as you can.
