modern japanese SPORT bikes (honda, yamaha, suzuki and kawasaki) have it one down for the first gear and up for the rest (up to sixth gear) . Getting to neutral position is a bit tricky , from the first gear position, get it halfway up and you'll be in neutral position this configuration is common among Sport models. The earlier GENERAL UTILITY bikes have a different configuration, example the kawasaki CDI uses a rotary gear.. all going down N-1-2-3-4-5-N the Suzuki does'nt return to the N position though its all going down N-1-2-3-4-5 the same as Yamaha and honda models.

On five speed bikes nearly always 1 down and 4 up. Some modern bikes have 6 gears, so 1 down and 5 up.

1 down 4 or 5 up for most Jap bikes. Some (eg some Enfields, not the more recent ones) still have right foot change, one up 3 down. Track bikes sometimes have the linkage reversed, so you get 1 up 3, 4, or 5 down.

To be honest 30 years is a big gap, have you considered taking a refresher course with a local motorcycle training school, motorcycles have moved on by a huge amount in the last 30 years. Good luck with whatever you decide and welcome back to biking.

For driving contained in the airborne dirt and airborne dirt and dust, suited driving kit is obligatory. That stated, putting your foot down at the same time as cornering is a need. examine out any video for off highway bike racing on YouTube. The racers will continuously have their foot out at the same time as cornering.

Welcome back!
Mine were all 1 down, the rest up.
I always checked each before I rode it for the first time.
The only one I've had that didn't have the shift pattern marked on the case is the 2006 Harley-Davidson.

Welcome Back if your gonna start riding again. You gotta consider models with toe/heel shifting on tourers and cruisers with floorboards. It gets confusing at times when your heel does the work that your toe wants to do instead. Turn signals are on left (unlike H.D) It all comes back quick.
