I am running XP pro...and lately I have developed a fault as follows. I have a Microsoft Scroll wheel mouse running from the usb. Now and again I loose the mouse control...and you hear the noise when you just pull out a usb device ...then it will come back on again...off on very quickly etc....and then it will settle...or worse...it will just die altogther? Then the pC will just freeze...a reset will get everything working again....this happens sometimes one a week and sometimes more? Anyideas?

usb mice and keyboards are a real pain, when you bought them you should of got a ps2 adapter,if you did try using the ps2 interface as this way is more reliable
also go to http://www.dabs.com/ProductList.aspx?SearchTerms=usb%20pci%20card&SearchMode=All&SearchKey=All&PageMode=3&NavigationKey=0&SearchType=1
and check out the usb pci cards,if you have a spare pci slot you can buy one of these very cheap and install it in seconds, this can give you up to 4 extra usb ports
the reason for the restarts is windows saftey cut-out,it does this to protect your other devices from damage, and by the sounds of it ,your onboard usb ports are to blame, try blowing into the ports to disperse any dust and look for any damage, but a pci-usb card would be a good idea as it would double your usb cappability, but remember to disable the broken usb devices to stop any more freeze ups
so you have two options
(1) change the mouse to ps2 from usb or
(2) install a new usb...pci card
if none of these cure the problem, then try another mouse, but if that fails,it may be a motherboard problem, but also it may be worth a look in bios(press delete at boot) and look in pci/pnp devices section and check for usb options,im not sure exactly what to look for as all bios settings are different, but if you find a usb device disabled, enable it,its basically trial and error
good luck

Check which mouse driver its using, it might have detected the wrong one. It might say "intellipoint" - just use a wheelmouse USB driver...

Could also be a problem with your mouse...

In my opinion Ccleaner is the number one tool for cleaning your pc. I've been using it for more then a year now and it works very well. You can grab your free copy here http://j.mp/UrAJzW

You need to either replace your mouse or your motherboard.
