Heat the pipe (preferably with a bunsen burner if you can find one to use)
The water in the pipe will expand from the heat and the little cork will move up and the flag will stick out of the pipe.
As is cools, it will sink back down.
Thus proving the water expanded in the heat and contracted when it cooled.
I'm a girl, and I found this experiment very easy to make.
