Previous generations of athletes did not have the facilities or the means to travel abroad to train AND they often had to work full time to support themselves. Today's athletes have more support and capacity to earn money than ever before, but since the golden era of the eighties and nineties, we seem to have gone backwards

In the sports where people are paid it seems they aren't anything special but other sports where they arent paid, I think that these sports are better then ever because they are doing it because they love it ,but I think that there will always be the "greats" and I think that everyone is training the same so its hard to stand out

It could all stem from the lack of grass roots athletic comps in schools.

It definitely seems that way. Maybe athletes are not hungry enough and they are cossetted.
