I used to give an IV medication to cancer patients that was GOLD based. Yes, it helped them but it was GOLD. The IV bag had to be wrapped in paper to prevent light from touching it because if it did the medication would have no effect. The IV line also had to be wrapped. One night, when I came on duty at the hospital, I walked into a patient's room and there was the GOLD drug hanging on the IV pole, unwrapped. Yup, they charged the patient the price but it did them no good, all because some other nurse was so lazy and ignorant.
Ancient Ayurvedic doctors in India also treated patients with metals and still do and one of these metals is Gold. It can help people.

It depends, and no one really knows that answer as there are many pharmecutical companies which produce thousands of different drugs. They all cost billions to produce, which is why they are so costly to us, yet most of us have insurance and don't see the full cost.
