You take a piece card board, say about 3 feet in diameter. You use big letters and write, "DOCUMENTRY" on this and place it about 10 feet away. Then you take a gun and shoot the damn thing. And you shot yourself a DOCUMENTRY!

Voila!

G'day Lillian M,

Thanks for your question.

I am oversimplifying but these are the essential steps:

a) select a subject;

b) research the subject including what footage you will need for the film;

c) raise finance to ensure that your documentary is seen;

d) select a team of people to work with you on the film;

e) organise the footage including shooting film and getting footage from film libraries and archives;

f) edit the film.

You might want to read some books on the topic to get more information. Good books on the topic include:

* Ian Aitken (ed) Encyclopedia of the Documentary Film, Routledge, 2005

# Erik Barnouw, Documentary. A History of the Non-Fiction Film, Oxford University Press 1993
#Julianne Burton (ed.), The social documentary in Latin America, Pittsburgh, Pa. : University of Pittsburgh Press 1990
