A reasonable price ( for venetian standards...) and VERY close to the piazza:

Old historical palazzo with "flair", moderate price:

Stay in Venice Mestre at the Golden Tulip hotel. Best bang for your buck... Great service, great rooms, and great breakfast! Hotel is next to the train station that will take you right into Venice, the city, maybe a 10 minute ride.

Use the Rick Steves guide book. Whe I went to Venice I found a hotel in there that cute, clean, and cheep, it was also right aroung the corner from San Marco. I forget the name but it was great.

In Venice you can't find to stay "with resonable prices".You can try in Mestre, a little city, very close from Venice.

whilst we went to Rome we stayed on the Bernini Bristol, it wasn't precisely low-fee, yet in a solid centeral area for walking to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. There are Hop On/Off excursions which might help get around the city. additionally, be helpful to circulate to Vatican city, the wait is longggg yet nicely well worth the time.
