Alcohol, or rather ethanol is a Central Nervous System (CNS) depressant. This means that is suppresses neuronal activity in the brain. It's perceived effects however are dependent upon the parts of the brain which it affects first.
Ethanol first starts to affect the parts of the brain that cause anxiety and inhibitory behavior, so the initial effects of etanol intoxication are disinhibition and euphoria.
As the dose increases, the inhibitory effect of ethanol exerts its effects progressively on other parts of the brain. In most cases it will have an effect on the chemoreceptor trigger zone which will cause you to vomit and thereby prevent any further absorbtion of alcohol from your gut.
Eventually the inhibitory effect of ethanol on your brain may inhibit your breathing which is controlled by the medulla and may cause asphyxia.
Most of the worst effects of a hang over are caused not by ethanol itself but by acetaldehyde, which is the breakdown product of ethanol by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase and by dehydration.

Your brain is taken over by aliens, and the more you drink the more the control of your brain is lost. Eventually, your brain starts to lose control of your body and then it just goes to sleep.
In the long term your brain is enhanced by this procedure if you were too intelligent to start with. You needed to reduce your IQ to a normal level.
In the short term it can be frightening experience being a puppet for aliens that have a sadistic and cruel sense of humour.
I am aware that people with low IQ tend to become very agressive under the influence of aliens who control them when they have alcohol on the brain.

Nerves are separated into minute sections which transmit and carry messages from the brain much quicker than if they were one long line. These sections are covered in a fatty substance called the myelin sheath. As fat is dissolved in alcohol, when alcohol is consumed these sheaths become unstable and therefore the signals from the brain are not connected as quickly as normal. This is why our reactions become slower and thoughts and speech become slurred.
