Yes I believe. Experiment it by keeping some sweet eatables or sugar in an air tight container nearer to the place where the ants are and see after few hours or days. You will be surprised to see ants eating the food inside it.

In a way , if they have tunnelled deep into timber there can be thousands in the nest and it is very organised down there. With hundreds of openings and the speed they can move it may appear so as if one comes in one must go out elsewhere on guard duty.

yes they do apparently.
I have just wiped out a heap that were attacking my home ive heard you should find the nest in order to wipe them out compleatly.
But where do you start and finish i drilled some holes through some trees on my property to no avail .
Ive heard they could be 6 meteres underground and not necessarelly in a tree .
One termite company wanted to bait them where i discovered them eating my home for $2500.00 but no way i wanted them gone .
there was no way i was going to stand by as these things ate my home so i called in another professionall who was too fat to get right under my house to spray them so i got his sprayer and crawled under there myself.
I saw the mud trails leading from the ground up a stump and into my floor joists from there they were entering my door jambs and eating away.
so i flooded the mud trails(they crawl in those in compleatre darkness as they hate light) and the surrounding area with about 150 litres of the termite poison.
So hopefully from not destroying there nest they wont pop up elsewhere.
Dang i hate those critters good luck with em.

no they cannot disappear
if they could then scientist would use this technology and try on humans
but it is not true
no one can disappear they are large in numbers so you may have mistaken to count them.
