Mostly fake when it's going well, but sometimes they do hit each other.

Both.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the outcome is scripted. Sometimes, the outcomes change numerous times during the day (this only really happens during a major Pay-Per-View, though). For the most part, though, the bookers or writers come up with an outcome, and it's up to the wrestlers (or extremists, rebels, superstars, what have you) to make the outcome happen.

The throws, chops, kicks, arm wrenches, sleeper holds, full and half nelsons, body slams, suplexes, superplexes, and top rope moves are real. Some of the punches are not; instead, they're glancing blows that are accentuated with the grappler stomping his foot on the mat. The chair shots are mostly real, unless the grappler's on the mat, then it's mostly fake. Case in point, I went to a WWE (I hate typing that) House Show last week, and when the Undertaker wailed on the Great Khali with a chair, he was actually hitting the ring instead of the wrestler. Go figure. The sledgehammer shots are fake; if you look closely, HHH is actually covering the head of the sledgehammer with his hand.

In the end, it's just entertainment; it's not meant to be ground-breaking drama. I've been watching Pro Wrestling since I was 6, and I love it for what it is: a soap opera for guys with athletic wrestlers and good entertainment.

Firstly, being an avid WWE fan, I must correct you. It is NOT F, it's E as in Entertainment. By the name alone, you should have figured out that professional wrestling isn't what you'd categorize as "real." Then again, I hate people who call it fake because there are so many wrestlers who put their necks on the line just to entertain the crowd. They abuse their bodies daily in both wrestling and keeping up with the rigorous travel schedule. I wouldn't call someone who goes over to Iraq just to put on a great show for our troops in appreciation "fake!" The match is predetermined, however, but the thing that most fans miss is that THEY (the fans) DON'T KNOW WHO WILL WIN/LOSE/WHATEVER ELSE! Besides, if you're watching wrestling mainly for the outcome, that's a bit asinine. The reason you should love it is for the athleticism the wrestlers display in that ring as well as their ability to grab a microphone and make the fans cheer/jeer as loudly as possible. That's something no other sport seems to do; they don't incorporate this type of drama that's based partly on an individual's charisma and comfortableness with speaking in front of a crowd. Most participants in other sports don't even hold microphones unless they're commenting on how well or poorly they did in their match to some host. Plus, you have to bear in mind that wrestling is a perennial sport, not a seasonal one. Wrestlers are on the road a minimum of four days a week, traveling EVERYWHERE.

The drama in wrestling is created by storylines. Duh. DX hate the boss and his son, so they go at it in the ring and backstage. If this really were true and not a storyline, the logical thing to think of is that the boss would just fire DX. That doesn't make money, though. Generally, all wrestlers are pretty good friends with each other despite on-camera rivalries.

This is just an additional piece of information not pertaining to the question, really. If you want good wrestling, something outside WWE, TNA has top-notch wrestling. The only thing they lack are strong storylines, depth of characters (because most wrestlers on TNA don't really talk much), and money. However, fans totally respect the fact that TNA wrestlers are so gifted, so check that out if you haven't already. Besides TNA and WWE, you'd have to travel over to Japan or Taiwan or some maybe China to get Japanese wrestling on TV since we don't offer it here in the States. *sigh* How sad... however, any true wrestling fan will tell you to check out the independent circuit where unknowns showcase their wrestling talents to the max. That's substantially harder, though, since you'd actually have to be near a place that an indy fed frequents in order to see. It's not readily available on television. You can, however, order videos online.

Bottom line: WWE/professional wrestling is considered a lot of things to different people. You figure out for yourself whether you have enough respect for the sport to label it as "fake" or "real." I just hope you're not one of those ignorant ones that label without considering everything.

That's why Vince McMahon calls it sports entertainment and not a sport. Everything is scripted out beforehand. If you watch the documentary with Mick Foley and the one with Brett Hart, you see them actually scripting the matches before they start. It's about theatrics but there still is a lot of athleticism to it.

If you really think that the WWE is somewhat real, please give me your phone number; I have a big orange bridge in San Francisco that I'd LOVE to sell you.

damn it. it is all fake and it is all scripted, but the landings, the jumps off laders, the injuries, they are definately real. and just like real life, behind the scenes, there are people who really don't like each other.
