Thanks dalia, getting somewhere. No thanks to the one before you.

I bet it doesn't go back as long as humans do, and I doubt before 1900.

Honestly, I don't think you will be able to find out how long the French kissing goes back. I think it might be as old as humans. But you might find out around what period and how it came to be labeled as French kissing. Here's one opinion:

FRENCH KISS - This term has probably been in use since World War I, but became extremely popular with teenagers during the late 1930s." From "I Hear America Talking" by Stuart Berg Flexner (Von Nostrand Reinhold Co., New York, 1976).

It's mentioned in the Arabian nights - funny because I was once with an Arab divorcee who had never experienced it before.
It's also mentioned in Thomas Nashe's Elizabethan poem The Choice of Valentines.

Try getting hold of The Kiss in History, edited by Karen Harvey (Manchester University Press, £15.99, offer £12.79 plus £2.25 p&p, call 0870 1608080), as I'm sure it will answer your question seriously.
