It depends on when the tear ducts open up. It's earlier for some kids than others. Sometimes the tear ducts don't open or become clogged then baby's eye gets a really weird gunk that comes out of it. It looks like sleep but it's there a lot and matts the eye shut. So the doctor can treat it with an antibiotic or if it's a serious case he has to take a sharp pointy thing (sorry about the poor description but I don't exactly remember the procedure) and open the clogged duct. It happened to my daughter. Fortunately the antibiotics cleared her's open and she's cried real tears ever since. Even when there was no reason to cry.

My baby didn't start crying actual tears till around 2 months of age. But then again, my baby didn't cry very much till around that age either. They typically have to cry for a long time before actual tears come out.

my son started crying tears from 1month old and by the looks of all previous answers you have it seems its probably at anytime from birth depends on the baby i guess, i do wonder can premature babies cry real tears if thats the case tho.
