If your computer is 4 plus yrs old--your hard drive will be slowing down. They typically last 5 yrs.
Check your memory.
Get rid of programs you dont use.
Run a defrag and scan disc.
Last but not least--run a spyware program and get rid of all spyware.
If your doing heavy downlaoding from the net--especially media--your going to have spyware.
Two good free programs to rid spyware are "adware.com and Spybot.com".

Many things could cause this but first make sure you have enough RAM (working memory). You could add RAM to your PC and/or you could use a program such as RAMBooster which works all the time to free up RAM and helps things run more smoothly and quickly

Check your memory, or if you feel up to the task, perhaps check your CPU cooling? Fans and thermal paste can wear out after a while. If you can't do it, you might want to pay someone who can to reapply your thermal paste and perhaps replace your HSF.

I'm in the same boat, but if you leave your computer and the light is flashing like mad to tell you its doing something, then it will come back to life eventually. give it time
