an answer to another one of my questions reminded me to ask this. I've heard references to 'pet rocks' and always wondered, 'what the hell?'

back in the 80s some guy invented the pet rock, you got a little rock in a box with breathing holes in it and a training manual, it was a joke but everyone took to it as well as they did the tomagochi or however you spell that. It was just a funny little nothing gift you could give anyone

Back in the days before PCs were in every home, they came up with a marketing gimmick. They put rocks inside of boxes with straw and included a training manual. They were really good at "sit" and "stay".

The fad lasted about six months during the Christmas shopping season but the guy became a millionaire.

It was a big fad in the early 70's.
It came in a small cardboard box similar to what you get when you buy a bird at a pet store, along with a little booklet that explained how to care for and train it.
Checkout this link to see what you got.

Very low-maintenance pets! They eat little and don't use kitty litter! Also, if you ever get bored of them, simply chuck 'em away - they have no rights!!
