I live in Peckham! I've also lived in a lots of other parts of London and I can honestly say it really is no better or worse than most other places outside central London. There are some bits that are a bit dodgier than others and you'd need to avoid if walking alone at night, but there's a lot going for it. There are great transport links to Victoria and London Bridge on the mainline trains, loads of buses, and if you cycle you're in central London in under 20 mins.
There are some great places to live near Bellenden Road, this is a quiet area of Peckham, close to East Dulwich but without the higher property prices. Streets of Victorian Houses, great rail links, close to Lordship Lane in East Dulwich which has great shops, bars and restaurants. Rye Lane is very lively, lots of bizarre shops. Come and check it out. Stroll up Rye Lane, mosey round Bellended Road, head for Lordship Lane and then get a train home. Don't let ill-informed people put you off a quiet part of South East London. (But avoid North Peckham, it's been regnerated, the old tower blocks are gone but it's still not got a nice vibe there!)

I live nearby in Brockley, Lewisham and know Peckham quite well. I worked there from '81 - '89, it was rough then but still full of energy. But now it seems to be a lively place with the same kind of energy but without the trouble. Oh I know you're think "wait a minute we've just had the Damilola Taylor trial. However believe me it was much more likely in the past to have worse crimes, so many they weren't all reported. These days it is a joy to visit and I would move there. Don't listen to the doubters.
