"Cheap" and "Learning to ride properly" almost NEVER go well together. Look around at different barns and lesson programs. Find a few that are good and talk to them about doing barn chores for a discounted lesson rate. You will probably end up with the chores no one wants, mucking stalls, ect.

Remember, a good barn is not the most expensive one or the one with the nicest facilites. The barn should be clean, the horses sound and healthy. The tack should be clean, simple and in good repair. Its a REALLY big plus if the instructor is certified.

You could also get a part time job, or ask your parents how you can earn more money. You could also join a 4-H club that may or may not involve riding, but should include at least some hands on experiances, that would make it easier to land that job mucking stalls in exchange for lessons. Good Luck!

If around Durango area, I can find a few for you to look into.

I am from California and only familiar with Durango, CO area.

I do recommend you looking in your phone book or on line directory of riding stables and stables to see if they have people who give lessons. Then make a list and see which place is the cheapest that goes in your income level.

Also ask if there is any exchanges as a side note. Ex: clean stalls or so to help in the cost.

maybe you should try to get a job at a riding stable. they usually don't pay much, but you will learn about horses from both ends and normally the stables are willing to teach riding in return. Some owners hardly ever see the horses they own, but the horses still need to be groomed and ridden regularly. just an idea.
