The country is a mess.

They really need peace. The Tamil Tigers are clearly not inclined to seek it, and the new Government has exacerbated things by explicitly ruling out a federal system.

In a country where a large minority lives in a distinct area federalism is by far the best way to prevent conflict and to end the current one.

It works really well in India, where although there is violence you do not see this degree of conflict. Or in Belgium between the French and Flemish speakers... Or in Catalonia in Spain.

Federalism is the way forward. I actually think if the Sri Lankan Sinhala politicians could get their heads out of their nationalist asses long enough to give not just serious consideration, but ACT on it, peace would be round the corner.

The Tigers would of course remain a problem for the Tamil people - they are hardly a democratic pluralistic organisation. But first problems first. The country's long-standing war NEEDS to stop, and the only people of any consequence the SL government can negotiate with are the Tamil Tigers.

And if, after federalism a pluralistic, democratic majority of the people in the North-East of Sri Lanka choose to become independent, that is their democratic right. It is ridiculous to hold countries together just for the sake of it. But that majority must include the local muslims and give fair representation to the Sinhalese minority in the East as well.

Otherwise, it is a beautiful country...

Sri Lanka is a paradise if there was no government messing up the country. People lived in harmony before politics took over.

hi there,i'm a srilankan too, well,in my idea,it's a very gorgeous country(i mean you can go frm sunny Down South to the chilly hills of Nuwara-Eliya in only a matter of a few hrs!),cool culture,wild-life is great(i think it has the only elephant orphanage in the whole world which is Pinnawela),nice, friendly people, fun beaches. only 3 problems: 1) politics 2)the civil war 3)high cost of living...if we could just solve these matters,it would be a great country to live in my opinion.let's hope that they will be solved-cheers!
