Oh dear! This old question again. You'll never get a definitve answer because the best are over many decades and you can't compare machines from the twenties with those of the modern era. I'll just give you my list of the best from several decades. In no order:
Senna; Lauda; Prost; Schumacher; Nuvolari; Fangio; Clark; Graham Hill; Brabham. I'll probably think of more after I've finished this!

I know people have different reasons to believe in many great drivers behind the wheels of an F1 car.

But for me - it is the great Schumi. It is not because he is one person I got to see in my life time. But because of one season that he didn't win - the 2005 !

He just drove the be-cheeses off one of the worst cars on track to be the 3rd in the championship (Check Ruben's record to see what that car really could do) The commitment this season and the desire to win from the year he started ! and most of all what he has achieved more than any one else - the wins, pole positions, podium finishes, race starts etc. Still he has the determination.

My second would be Senna then Prost.

The best driver was/is/will be(hopefully) the guy they call Schumi/ Red Baron/ Michael/ or simply put Michael Schumacher. He is the one who knows how to extract the maximum out of his car, drives on the edge at times, yet not foolishly like Montoya, pretty bold and most importantly has a superb brain to top it off. Senna might hve been fast but if you have to go for the entire package it has to be Schumi. Read Michael Schumacher: Driven to Extremes by James Allen. An excellent book that gives a frank judgement of the driver that he is.

Too hard to say.

F1 cars have evolved so much in the past 50 years or so, making comparisons of drivers of different eras isn't fair.

The thing is, the most successful F1 driver isn't always the most entertaining to watch.

Some successful drivers are:
Juan-Manuel Fangio
Alain Prost and
Michael Schumacher

In my opinion, the most entertaining drivers were always on the ragged edge:
Tazio Nuvolari (pre WW2),
Gilles Villeneuve,
and Ayrton Senna
