My son had been sleeping through the night until recently. Now he wakes up @ 2a.m. and won't go back to sleep unless I hold him or put him in the bed with my husband and I. I give him cereal with his bottle before bed thinking that will help, but it doesn't. I thought by 5 months everyone would be sleeping better. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem with my son at about the same age, now he is almost 10 months and he sleeps all night most of the time, sometimes he wakes up too, like when he is thursty or its just to warm, ur lil one might just be growing or teething. Bathing or feeding him certain kinds of foods to make him not being hungry through the night, believe me all that doesnt help, i tried it too. My doctor told me whenever he is ready to sleep all night he will, no matter what u feed him and how much and about 1 month later he did. Just be a lil patient, he will sleep all night again very soon:-)

I have twins; one slept through the night from ~3 months, the other didn't until ~6 months. At first the one that woke up wanted fed, but over time I waited longer before picking them up and I also reduced the amount of food each time. That did the trick, but it took a while. The other approach is cold turkey if you can bear to let them cry for 10 minutes or so and they'll get the message after a few days (some people tell me that this can take a week or so).

Right now your son is used to crying and being picked up, so if he wants to be picked up....he'll cry!

P.S. almost all babies "cry" in their sleep, or wake up, cry a little, and immediately go back to sleep. New parents (as I was) always want to get up at the slightest noise in case something's wrong, but sometimes, some crys are just because....

Is he sleeping too much during the day? Feed him well before going to sleep, burp him and put him on to sleep by gently holding him to your chest with his ear close to your heart.
Avoid putting him on diapers during night.Instead have a water-proof sheet under his normal sheets. Let him piss on it during night.
If he is getting up at 2 am, instead of feeding him cereals, either breastfeed him or give diluted cow's milk( Little warm).Their biological clock are yet to be set and hence this untimely child's play!!!

He might be teething. You can try giving him some Motrin before bed and see if that helps. Babies go thru different phases, too. He might just be having something in him that wants Mama during the night. Have patience, this too shall pass!

Bathe him, massage , give him a feed and follow with solids - this has given me 8 hours of bliss a night with my daughter

And to the comment above you're not supposed to give cow's milk until they are over 1!
