Well, the old wives tale is often true--eating before bedtime can give you nightmares, especially if you are prone to stomach upset / pain. Also, an undue amount of stress or fear can bring them on, along with watching freakishly scary horror movies or reading a psychologically disturbing book. If none of that applies, it could be that you had a fleeting, but bizarre thought earlier in the day or that you picked up a weird vibe/ subliminal message that your mind decided to obsess on while you sleep. Finally, certain drugs can make you prone to having nightmares--especially anti-depressants, bi-polar meds, or certain psychotropic drugs because they are repressing natural (or, at least natural for YOUR brain/ chemistry) behaviors/ urges.

Sometimes if you witnessed something that scared you (or if you watched a horror/thriller movie that scared you), and when you still remember that scary part while you're trying to go to sleep. That scary part can also become a part of your dream where you are involved or the victim instead (like, some Freddy Kruger-faced psycho's about to stab you to death)... well, don't die in that nightmare or you'll wake up dead lol.
It's also caused by excessive consumption of salty foods -- soy sauce, salted nuts... and even salty eggs? LMAO! But yeah, salty food.

I too have various nightmares. despite the fact that, i do no longer understand a thank you to reason them. perhaps various tension, or a fatigue. I savour a number of them, yet some are greater desirable than i can take. oftentimes I awaken in a chilly sweat, it extremely is a hurry. i'm happy approximately this: i do no longer undergo in techniques each and each of the nightmares, so i do no longer could relive them repeatedly back.

Dreams and nightmares are left over unresolved issues from your day, awake, life. Add in fears, and phobias and you have nightmares that seem to take hold whenever your system is taxed from stress.
Sometimes you have daymares that won't let you sleep, and those are the worst.
My personal observations.

Nightmares are caused by people trying to fight issues intellectually during sleeping.

Nitemares are typically caused by these things:
Stress, a bad day, a scary movie or book, indegestion, REM sleep (you are much more likely to have a nitemare at this time.), and most commonly...Eating right before you go to bed. Eating right before you go to bed makes you more likely to have a vivid dream, and therefore you are more likely to have a nitemare.
Personally, I enjoy my nitemares. If they're original and not because I saw a scary movie, they make good fodder for writing material.
Hope I helped!

When I look at my nightmares (I know nothing about anyone else's) I can see that issues that I have fears about are represented in these dreams. Usually about failure (although I rarely fail) or humiliation, which is my greatest fear.
