Read W. E. B. Griffin. To quote the Barnes and Nobles web site
"Fellow bestselling author Tom Clancy is right on target when he describes W.E.B. Griffin -- world renowned for his military and police novels filled with vivid detail and dead-on accuracy -- as "a storyteller in the grand tradition, probably the best man around for describing the military community." http://www.barnesandnoble.com/writers/writer.asp?cid=883328&z=y

He's the best military story teller that I've read. And I'm pretty picky in what I read.

Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien. By far one of the best books I've ever read, about a war or otherwise. This book gets right into the madness of war and what it does to men. It's not necessarily historical.

Another pretty good non-fiction book is Chickenhawk which is about heli-pilots in Vietnam

Books by H. Jay Ryker (navy SEALs book series), The Men With Green Faces; I forget the author but I am looking for that particular book right now.

The Tim O'Brien suggestions are great - I teach them often.

A much more readable but still very powerful book (though it's memoir and not fiction) is called "In Pharaoh's Army" by Tobias Wolff. Very engaging, and very quick reading.

I'm a former paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division... I think that LBS's books are realistic and are well worth the purchase price... Loved them... I hope you do too

You can't be serious! Fiction on Viet Nam War??? What next, children's books on the Holocaust?
