Kind of a dumb question hah.. but tommorow, Saturday, I'm having a yard sale.

I live in a Suburban neighborhood.

I'm 16, and not the most muscular guy in the world hah...

And it just so happens that I couldn't snag a friend in time to do my yard sale with me.

Just wondering if I should take a knife or something to defend myself with.. I doubt it, but ya never know.. Someone up to no good sees an unsuspecting kid by himself, who's obviously got money and electronics around him, and might try to rob me or take off with something of mine..

Is theft and robbery really an issue at yard and garage sales?

you never know who comes to yard sales...if it makes you feel better..have a friend with you...people do steal at them..they get you distracted and the other guy rips you off...depends where you live also...personally i would NEVER run one alone! and you have hot items there..you're smart asking about that though...most wouldn't think of it...be safe and make lots of money!...if you have to be alone..tell your neighbors so they will know and help keep watch on you..

Many people will take what they can from a yard sale. It's to easy for them not to. Your so busy with other people you don't always notice the ones picking up stuff and walking away with it. I subject that you have your sale some where you feel safer at. Maybe at another relatives home and see if they want to sale anything . I don't think you keeping a knife around is a wise decision. Someone innocent could get hurt . Your better off having someone help you or see if you can have your sale at a safer area.

Is theft and robbery really an issue at yard and garage sales?

Yes it is--sadly anywhere one's held: be it on the 'wrong' side of the tracks or in the affluent upscale neighborhoods. If you hold a garage sale, appoint two or three people to be on the watch in strategic places for unusual signs of trouble. Each person should have handy a cellphone with the numbers of local law enforcement should such be needed.

And each security volunteer during the yard sale should NEVER approach a trouble-maker alone; have them get a real good look at the person(s), their getaway vehicle and their license plate so they can pass this information to responding police or sheriff's deputies.

This idea helped nab two teens who got videotaped by a security volunteer as they tried to get away with robbing a cellphone inside a customer's car. Last week, just down the road from me, a recently paroled prison convict was arrested for stealing a lady's purse she laid down for a second. He was reported to police--who got the guy on video blocks away, with purse in hand picking it out for money. The now jailed parolee faces 18 years for parole violation.

It all depends on the area but in my area you would be bringing a knife to defend the advances of little old ladies.

Only if you live in a bad neighborhood. Otherwise I don't see what the problem is.
