The conflict in the middle east was quiet all during the Ottoman Empire, and started again when the UN gave Palestine territory to Israel in 1948.
The best way to stop the current carnage is for the US to cancel the $43 billion in loans, military and financial aid to Israel, so that the major source of hostilities has to learn how to use diplomacy insteady of dropping bombs from an evergreen supply.

There is a simple answer, the first response hinted at it. A controlling body such as a government can maintain peace and give a unity to the people of the land, however that is not lasting the only way to truly end the fighting is to obliterate both sides. Because as long as you have both groups of people claiming the same land is theirs because there beliefs and cultural traditions and this deep rooted hatred is there this is the only answer. You can not change peoples hearts or faiths by words or actions.
Not to name names of counties, but some get blamed for doing to much while others claim doing to little. Yes perhaps the worlds super powers should step up to the plate and turn the land into a big multan glass crater using the same tools that suck the paint off your house and give your family a permanent orange afro!!!

It can't. Peace never lasts. It's an artificial place between wars- that heralds the changing of societies. In the Middle East- that change has always been dynamic, so peace has always been fleeting & transitional. If peace is EVER to come to THAT part of the world- God is going to have to deliver it in person. It's NEVER going to be achieved by the country that has the biggest weapons.

Well, I don't think anywhere in my brain do I have the knowledge to decide how to make lasting peace there, but I do know what we shouldn't do: turn our heads and pretend we never saw it.
I don't think a cease fire will do any good, because they've tried those before, I believe, and many of those terrorist groups have already shown us enough that they want everyone else dead. There's no doubt about it that this is going to effect everyone, so I think we all need to work together as a world, not as seperate nations, in order to create peace there.

The easiest way would be to redefine the borders of nations to coincide with ethnic divisions. Most countries of the ME have borders arbitrarily drawn up by the French and British after WWI. They put lines down where convenient, and paid no attention to the ethnic and religious issues involved.
For example, Iraq should be split into a Kurdistan, Shi'astan, and Sunnistan. This would make things easier, since with a common ethnoreligious background no one would feel left out politically since all three groups would have power.
That, or ban religion.

At this point of history when the West and the Muslim Countries are on a headon collision - mainly in the name of religion - it is very necessary that the political ties in terms of bi-lateral and regional forums are redefined in the sense of more specific terms. It looks that US of the past two decades was rather linient or even indulging in accommodating persons of middleeastern regions - in terms of mere persons - and not as the citizens of a specific land.
A person or a group of religious fundamentalists not politically pleged to a land is indeed a force sans any accountability.

The only way is (it will never happen though) for every country to back off from either supporting Israel or the various other groups fighting Israel. Israel should allow Palestinians to live and work in Israel without harrasment and the Palestinians in turn, should destroy groups like Hamas. The Lebanese should outlaw Hezbollah and make it a crime to join such organizations. They should make peace with Israel and Israel should aid in the reconstruction of Lebanon.

WE CAN'T, it's up to them, the people that live there to do that. We can only offer our help, and it seems we've oversteped our bounderies already.
