Depends on what is your definition of hit or flop. Most answers here have been based on whether the folks liked the movie or not, meaning if you liked then hit else flop. This is how most people view it as well:-)

In actual terms a hit or flop is determined by the "Return on Investment" for the producers/distributors of the movie. A movie which recovers its money is termed as "average success" or "commission earner". A movie which does not recover is a flop and a movie which makes a decent profit is a hit. Basically saying the amount grossed should be proportional to its budget/cost.
Omkara seems to be a "commission earner" due to the high costs associated with the movie. I personally thought the movie was good but with too much of expletives.

Media is also not a true barometer as sometimes they exaggarate stuff (Ex: when released 'Hera Pheri' was a flop but now everyone seems to think it was a huge hit).

The media thinks it's a flop. But the media is not a true barometer of a movie's success.

I personally liked the movie, it is so different from the "formula" movies that bollywood churns out like toys from an assembly factory. Saif Ali Khan emerged as a versatile actor kudos to him acting skills, he is one of my favorites (what a turn around from his earlier movies where he just looked like his Mommy in pants).

And then there are Ajay Devgan, Kareena who also have molded into character actors rather than shaking a leg and hip.

"Firangi" Oberoi and shapely Bips are a bit disappointment from acting perspective but hey I will watch Bips anytime (just don't pair her with "Ash").

Omkara remains one of the best films no matter what!

Yes, its a beautiful movie. It's all about love with serious ending. But most of the people preffered the acting of Saif and Ajay Devgan.

Take care.
