I want to become a psychologist, but Im completely naive about the fields, the years at college, etc. The type of psychologist I would like to be is one that holds sessions to individually help people. Will I be able to get a doctorate degree like this within psychology? Or is that more into psychiatry? Im only in high school and am very interested in pursuing a career with psychology so help is greatly appreciated :)

Yes you will.

Most therapists have a least a master's degree, usually two years.

A Doctorate is another two at least, and the thesis could drag on for many more.

A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor that has some training in therapy but usually concentrates on prescribing medication. Most Psychologists I know don't really like math, so you are on the right track. Who wants to memorize all the names of your bones anyway?

So would I, that would be a Private practitioner. They also may work in groups or have their own office to themselves. It takes either an MD or PhD or PsyD. The good about the MD is you can prescribe medicine but you should go into that if you are more interested in the human scientific type stuff and Psychology if you are more into the mind Philosophy, Social type stuff. Then there also is Adult or Child.
Good luck to you my friend and God bless!

This might help if you're studying Psychology.
There IS a difference between Psychology and Psychiatry.
From what you have described, it sounds more along the lines of psychologist/counsellor.

I think the field that you are interested in is indeed psychiatry. In order to have the type of practice that you want you will need to have a phd in psychiaty, which involves many years of school. You'll probably want to major in psychology, but you'll need to keep high grades in order to get into post-graduate institutions.

What you seem to really want is more along the lines of Psychiatry I believe. And as far as I know you need Psychology and some medical training for that. I could be wrong. Your best bet is to talk to your advisor/counselor and contact different universities and see what they offer in the way of courses/professions and then what the requirements are for the degrees.

your looking at about 8 to twelve years of collage. then theres the internship. be very sure you want to do that kind of work because if you let it get to you, it can be very emotionally damaging. there are some very strange and disturbed people out there. i finished my internship but never got my licence.
