It is hard to tell which state is the cheapest. After all, all states have a mix of cheap and expensive property. Once you settle on a few possibilities, here is a website that allows you to do all kinds of comparisons including cost of living:
http://www.bestplaces.net/city/
Good luck with your search.

It's kind of a loaded question...no offense. I like the thought but it's impossible to say "cheapest" because they do data saying "overall most affordable" which is usually Montana, & Wyoming but there may be cheaper "areas" within states somewhere else in the country. It really depends what you're wanting or looking for as far as mountains, ocean, lakes, fast pace life, relaxed, etc...

Almost any rural or desert area. I visited western Tennessee some years ago and found prices there to be quite reasonable. But some places in the far west would likely be cheaper -- if you don't mind desert and extreme temperatures.

probably Wyoming, but i'm just guessing since it is the most desolate state. It has the lowest population and/or population density. ie Noone lives there!
