Several reasons either alone or in combination:

1. to keep the family together at all costs

2. they were abused when they were young

3, the genetic reason: goes back to our cave man days where women were attracted to the alpha males, the ones who could take care of them, provide for them, showed strength and confidence...women are naturally attracted to this type of male.

4. mental illness.

5. low self esteem

6. then, of course, the fear of getting beat

I can't answer for all women (one: I've never been in that type of relationship. two: many women have different reasons), but it could be because they feel having a man is better than nothing. I have a family member who went through this, and many of the women around her would preach to her that she needed a man in her life (no matter how bad he was) or she would be nothing. Luckily, she also haves other people in her life that told her that she does not need a man to define her. Of course, this is not why women in general put up with this, but this is just one woman's reason why.

Most women in that situation feels trapped. You know the guy who beats on women doesn't start the relationship like that. He is usually charming and loves to spend time with the woman. He is so close to them, he becomes her best friend her family her everything. He usually pushes everyone out of her life. Then the beatings start and since he has become her world she usually doesn't know where to go are how to stop it. That's why there are shelters for women like this.

I was married to a man that used me as his punching bag for twenty one years. I was afraid to leave him, he said that he would kill me if I ever tried. I knew that he would. My whole childhood was seeing my parents fight, and drink. Both of my parents were alcoholics, their parents were also alcoholics. My father beat me, he beat my mom. I thought this was just the way people lived. One day my chance to get away came and I walked out of that life. I have remarried and my husband now is so good to me. He has never hit me and I know that he never will. And I know now that life doesn't have to be hell. Men should NOT hit women.

Personally, I can say that the reason I stayed with the guy who hit me was because I was scared. Guys that beat women can minipulate women into thinking that he won't happen anymore. I'm proud to say after it didn't stop I left him but it's scary for some women. We aren't stupid it's because they make us feel worthless and we don't think we can do better, but we can and we will!

because men are generally larger and that can put fear into a fragile woman who is in comparison much smaller than a man, take the size of a mans hand, that could possibly in some*most* cases do more damage than a womans hand

sometimes they are to afraid to get out of the relationship. and the abusior makes them believe that they love them and they are sorry. even though they end up doing it again and again. and sometimes women believe they can change the man.
