explain this... at the age of 18 you can be tried as an adult, be sent to an adult penetentary, be given the death penalty, be drafted to the army and kill/be killed, you are old enough to move out and make your own choices, but you aren't allowed to consume alcohol.. does this not seem irrational?

The reason the alcohol law is the way it is, is not for frivolous reasons like we all would like to think. I admit I'm a bit of the same mind that if you can die for your country you should be able to drink.

But it turns out it's medically/scientifically proven that until around the age of 21 the human body cannot handle the consumption of alcohol well. At the younger ages it affects the body significanly more and can cause damage to the brain and liver much easier than the affects it has on the body at an older age. The reason the age of 21 was chosen is not because the body magically can hold it's liquor on your birthday, but more because this is an average-ish age for most people to reach the point in their lives when the consumption of alcohol will not be so detremental.

So yeah it sucks having to wait until you're 21. I hated it and didn't understand either until I did a bit of research on it.

I am 17 and have never driven drunk, nor have I supported anybody that does. I have personally taken keys out of peoples hand to make sure they don't. I have had friends try to drive me home when they only had one or two beers, but I chose to call my parents instead. I happen to be a responsible drinker, (yes I know legally I shouldn't be drinking at all) but not everybody is. I don't think that it is only "Teens" that are irresponsible. I use to live with my dad and he drove pissy drunk almost every night even after he got a D.U.I. and hit several trees, curbs, poles etc. My uncle had a suspended license for the same reason. Does it really matter what the drinking age is? People are going to get it anyways. We will have drunk drivers, alcohlics, and irresponsible drinkers at all ages. So I fail to see the point in lowering the drinking age.

Actually, it makes a lot of sense. How many times have you seen an underage person who has had a snootful, and they are acting like idiots, causing trouble, fighting, and any number of things that usually happen when alcohol is involved. Don`t misunderstand me, i am not implying that all underage drinkers are doing these things, but there is always a few who end up going way over the edge, personally i think a large percentage of the problems are due to the fact that they are just inexperienced in life, and have no true concept of how big a jacka** they actually are at the moment, because they are not yet mature enough to understand what they are doing, so yes, i say leave the age limit where it is.

Im tired of people saying "the damage done by teens when drinking." What about the damage done by people who are 21 and older who get drunk and do drugs and all of that stuff? If you are considered and "adult" at age 18 then it would be completely illogical to say you don't have all the rights that an adult has. If you don't then you are obviously not an adult yet becuase you can't do everything a "real adult" can do.

does not seem irrational....that means it's rational. And yes, I would agree. There's a lot of wisdom gained from 18 to 21. Responsibility seems a little more important. Trust me, you'll understand when you're 21.

There is NO draft....but you can enlist ON YOUR own FREE will. Used to be if you were in the military (awhile back) all you had to do was show the bartender your Military ID and you could drink.....they changed the laws tho.
So I totally see what your saying....it is unfair, and personally I never did understand it...quite stupid really.

i'm over the criminal age for some thing, yet i imagine for particular if you're previous sufficient to make your ideas up on to die on your usa, then you actually might want to be previous sufficient to offer up after artwork and performance a beer. it is ridiculous. as far as sex? i imagine too many adult men get in hardship cuz' their gf is 15 and he's 17 and her mothers and fathers get mad. i imagine the "sex" age might want to be an same for adult men and women. And, i imagine each and every thing might want to be an same age. If the authorities.needs 18 for balloting and enlisting, then it ought to correctly be 18 for ingesting and sex.

Actually, you can be tried as an adult at a younger age depending on the crime, you can die from a car accident at ANY AGE, you can smoke at 16.... so seriously, what's your point!?

No, not at all. Since everyone who is wiling to wait waits and those who are not already killed 5% of their renal system by drinking at their 16 bash, there's no need to change it.
