There are three friends involved: Alice has invited Mary to her daughter's wedding. Mary accepted the invite. Betty also invited Mary to her daughter's wedding. Mary wants to decline her invite.

Both Alice and Betty know each other and they live in the same town which is three hours by flight from Mary. Mary and Alice are very good friends. Therefore Mary just wanted to accept Alice's invite only. It is too costly for Mary to make two seperate trip within three weeks span.

Any best way for Mary to tell Betty she was unable to attend?

Write Betty a note saying "thank you for the lovely invite to the wedding, but I will not be able to attend." No explanation is needed. Send a gift and be done with it.

It depends on how good a friends they all are to each other. From the sound of it Mary and Alice are better friends then Mary and Betty. So I would tell Betty that as much as I would love to come I have already made prior plans to attend Alice's daughters wedding. And unfortunately I can't attend both since they are so close together. And since I have made a commitment to Alice already, I have to decline yours. I do wish your daughter the best in her upcoming wedding and hope that you understand why I am not able to attend . Then send her daughter a half descent gift; that's what it's all about anyway at least most of the time .

First of all there is no "best" way to tell Betty that Mary will not be attending a second wedding in the same town..3 weeks apart.
But if possible and if given enough time in advance, why not kill "2 birds with 1 stone " Meaning take 3 weeks time off to spend in that town and be at both weddings. The secret is to plan ahead on that one. Otherwise there will surely be hurt feelings and deep disappointment from Betty.

Mary needs to tell Betty that it is too expensive for her to make two trips so close together, but she should make an effort to see Betty when she is in town for Alice. And she should give some sort of gift to Betty's daughter, even though she has to miss the wedding.

She should send her friend a note with the reply card. She can explain that she does not have the money to attend her wedding, but she wishes her the best on her wedding day,
