Before you can download anything it has to be uploaded first.
If you go to a website that shares pictures, that you can download, then someone had to upload them first.
When the web designer built the website they included the pictures, the links, and all the other HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) code, but it only existed on their computer. To get it onto the Internet they had to UPLOAD it first. They connected with a company that hosts websites. They then rented space on that company's servers (the company's hard drives) and copied all of their website onto those machines. Only when it was there could it be downloaded. This puts a limit on what can be uploaded, because the website owner has to rent this space first.
Pier-to-Pier file sharing like Napster let people trade files without uploading the files. Instead it works more like a network. If you want to share music through Napster then a connection is made between the two file sharers on the Napster computer. The files comes out across the Internet, through the Napster computer, and then back out onto the Internet to the other person's computer. They are downloading music, but it is NOT uploaded.
Normally the only downloads you can get from a website are what has been previously uploaded to the host company’s servers. Napster designed a program that looked at the Internet to find everyone connected to it. It then looked on those people's hard drives to find the songs they allowed to be shared. The Napster computer didn't hold the songs; it only held the Information about the song (title, artist etc.) and where the song could be found. Napster's library was made up of ALL the songs on ALL the computers that were connected to it. This made a huge collection, and Napster only required a small website to run it (with a really good broadband connection).
Bit Torrent goes one better. It is a Pier-to-Pier file sharing program like Napster; only it handles movies, which are really big files. To download a movie from one source can take a long time (especially over a dial-up connection). So Bit Torrent connects several sites, and downloads the movie across several channels. If 10 people had the movie you wanted, then when connected to Bit Torrent you could automatically download a piece of that movie from each one of those 10 other people. This would cut the download time to 1/10th what would normally be required. Another good feature is that the movie is never uploaded to a server.
Uploading puts it on the Internet (and onto a Internet Server); Downloading pulls it off the Internet to your machine. But, Pier-to-Pier file sharing skips the Uploading stage entirely.

Uploading and downloading are related terms used to describe the transfer of electronic data between two computers or similar systems.
Their primary usage is as a verb: to download is to receive data from a remote system, such as a website, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server, or other similar systems. To upload is to send data from a local system to a remote system. However, the verbs do not generally apply in reference to the communication protocols used by websites, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) servers and the like.
The term "downloading" is often applied to the massive retrieval of music, DVD movies, software, and more. This usage is correct as long as the data is being received.
By extension, the terms can be used as nouns. In this context, an upload is any file that has been uploaded, particularly if it is awaiting the recipient's attention. A download is any file that is offered for downloading or that has been downloaded.
Similar, but less commonly used, the transfer of data from one remote computer to another is called sideloading.

Uploading is the transfer of data from a less powerful or a single system (a personal computer) to a more powerful (in most cases) or networked system. If you are sending files to a system so that others can view it or use it, that is uploading.
Downloading is when you retrieve files from a central system or a more powerful system.
