Probably Bette Davis. She was not beautiful, and yet she coud make you believe she was. She had a kind of power and charisma that could carry off many different roles. But she had the one "flaw" I think all American actresses have--you are always more aware that this is Bette Davis playing.....so and so, than this is so and so......oh, and it's Bette Davis playing her.
My favorite American actress of all time was Ava Gardner, but she played virtually the same role everytime. But she had that je ne sais quoi, that I don't think any other American actress has ever matched.
The younger American actresses haven't been given a chance to play people with dimensional characters, by and large.
But although I abhor the choice she made in playing the lesbian murderer, Charlize Theron seems to be to be among the most talented of the younger actresses.
