i've read in some novels that if you told someone your name (not the one you have now, the name that describes you as you truly are, changes and all) that it would give them power over you. I just though it would be a fascinating thing. But highly unlikely considering there aren't a lot of people out there who know their tru names.

I think the names you are talking about, are soul-names or true-names. They are hard to come by, though a few true names of enteties a revealed in scriptures here and there. Your own true name can be hard to come by, but don't try to get it, before you know how to handle the information properly. Please, trust me on this.

The names we use down here are powerful too, you could consider them like a mantra. Each name designates a blend of forces which are called upon from the cosmos to help shape your present incarnation. The consonants are hard to figure out (I think) but the vowels are more well documented:

A in a name emphasize the father or will aspect.
U in a name emphasize the son or warm consciousness aspect.
O in a name emphasize the mother or inteligent activity aspect.
I in a name emphasize the higher, abstract mind and the gross physical body.
E in a name emphasize the concrete mind and the etheric body.
Y in a name emphasize raw life-force, root power.

First name (in use?): What energies available through your higher self, are emphasized in this life. In other word, who you are your self.

Last names: Who you are socialized into being, also links to family karma.

Middle name: Who you can become in this incarnation, or rather, what aspects you can develop more in some way, coming to fruition later in life, after you are done growing up :)

That was a big thing amoung the shide...and in quite a few mythologies names give power. I don't remember it being valid for normal humans though. However, if you are talking about the present situation (on the internet) yes true names hold power...the power to create stalkers

In Egyptian mythology the Sun God, Ra had a secret name of power which nobody knew. Isis was able to get this secret name and then had complete power over him. As you can see, this concept is extremely ancient.

Let me guess, you have been reading Eragon?
Good book, but not to be taken seriously.
Much like Harry Potter. Good work of fiction.
A name is given to identify the person. It doesn't matter what the word is.

You must have been reading Eragon. I loved the book too, but like someone else said, it's like Harry Potter and not to be taken seriously. *sighs* Although I must admit....if Harry Potter was real...*grins and winks* I'd be having a blast.

Oh, and my name is Tabitha.

"There aren't a lot of people out there who know their tru names." And please tell me, how are we supposed to find out our "true" names? Names are a basis of identifying each other.

I have an idea of my true name, but I don't want you to have power over me...yes, I am being serious.

That is tied with the legends of dragons and of Djinn. If you found out the real name of a dragon you will be able to control it and have its hoard for your treasure. If you found out the name of a Djinn, they he/she would have to serve you for your life, they are your slave. As to humans....no true.
