Being you socialists are so distrusting of the government, why do you willingly give up your only real power?

Firearms are the only thing between you living in an autocracy and living in a democracy. Remember good ol' Stalin and Hitler? Gun bans quickly solidified their power and made sure the jews went quietly into the showers. Hunting rifles saved the day in 1776. Stalin wiped atleast 20 million people off the earth because he was paranoid, Hitler another 4-8 million. Are you to be next?

Bolt action rifles and pump action shotguns aren't exactly ideal for fighting any military style force.. They're great for hunting, but that's about it.

At the start of the revolution all of the men were state militia, and they had next to no European weapons or tactics, they were used to defending against native attacks.

I'm an Independent myself and a war vet and a member of the NRA. I go hunting every year and an proud to say I bagged a seven pointer last October.

But I really don't need a machine gun to defend myself. Do you?

Huh? Socialists don't distrust the government -- if anything, they give it excessive control. The trained professional Continental Army, won the American Revolution, not the militia or individuals using "hunting rifles" Never mind, I'm going to leave it at that. This is made up history.Random bar talk is far more informed.

If you're talking about revolutionary leftists, then they do believe in the right to have guns. How else do you overthrow (or at least protect yourself from) a government if you can't match their firepower? There are a lot of leftist guerilla groups in various countries - they all have weapons.

If the government ever becomes oppressive, whether because of the concentration of power or because of corruption by special interests, the ability of the people to overthrow the government is vital to the welfare of the people of the nation (not to mention vital to the survival of democracy as well).
