I've had a few of the "gimmick" beds...
TEMPURPEDIC - These were awesome. They're very comfortable and they give you great suport. The downside is that they tend to hold in body heat, so if you like it cold when you sleep, this is probably not something you want. Also, it's pretty firm which would be good for you, however, there's no "spring" in the bed. If you go to flop onto it, it's like doing a belly-flop. It's comfy, but it's definitely not what you're used to in a mattress. I ended up getting rid of mine becuase I like it really cold when i sleep.
SLEEP-NUMBER - This is pretty cool. I tried one of these out at a friend's house. I didn't know it was a Sleep Number at first. It felt comfy and I didn't mess with his settings. Now, I wish that I did. Once I found out that it was a Sleep Number bed, I was talking to my friend about it. He said the compressor is loud and it loses a little during the night (if you go to bed with number 70, you wake up at about 60 or 65) so sometimes you wake up and give it a kick which wakes you up even more becuase of the loud compressor.
VERLO - There aren't many Verlo stores around anymore (and I don't think they sell these anywhere but in in their own stores or at verlo.com), but you can still find them. This is the mattress I ended up buying after the tempurpedic. It's a varaition on the traditional spring mattress, but it's unbelievably comfortable. Basically, they use a different type of spring that distributes weight better. If you use the pillow-top, it retains body heat VERY WELL. Therefore, I don't just the pillow-top and it's still outrageously comfortable. When you first sleep on it, you'll notice that it feels different. And I'll be honest; it took me about a week or two to really appreciate it. It was like I was "okay" for the first week or two and then I must have worked off the "break-in" period. Now, it's a like sleeping on a cloud even though it's a pretty firm mattress. Overall though, they're a bit pricey, but they're well worth it.
SEALY - These are pretty comfy too. This is what I put in my guest bedroom and I've fallen asleep on it many times. When the wife is sleeping in our room, I sometimes lay on that bed to read before I hit the sack. I've fallen asleep there many times. It's pretty comfy and doesn't retain a whole lot of body heat.
Those are the ones I've owned or tried... Hope that helps...

Chattam & Wells have been operating in the mattress industry from the beginning of 1900s. Chattam and Wells mattresses have an advantage over their competitors. The edge support in the mattress provides more sleeping area, so that you can sleep on the whole mattress. This reduces tossing and turning and gives more peaceful sleep. When you sit on the mattress, you can sit firmly. To further improve the edge, thick foam pillars are inserted.

I shopped endlessly before deciding on the Englander mattress. They are as comfortable as the top brands that adverstise, but, because they don't advertise, they are half the price of the Sealy, Simmons, Serta, Tempurpedic, Sterns & Foster, etc. I told the salesman at one of the "matress discount" stores that I wanted a good solid pillow-top mattress like the one I purchased for my daughter (Chatham & Wells), but I wanted to spend under $1000 dollars. He thought I was crazy, and he said I'd never find it. Lo and behold, Englander is the answer. I've been sleeping soundly ever since (4 years), and I love to snuggle into my Englander mattress. It's not the foam kind, which they now make, but the traditional innerspring-type mattress. I don't remember the model name I bought.

I work in a mattress store, and my personal favorite mattress is the Rhapsody Bed by Tempur Pedic. This mattress just came out over the summer, and it contains the new High-density tempur material.
Tempur-pedic also has a 90day in home trial, so if you are not satisfied within 90 days you can send it back. The trial period will apply both on in-store tempur-pedic purchases and internet/phone tempur-pedic purchases.

Mattresses are something you need to try on your own. Go to your local furniture/mattress store and lay on a bunch of them. You can't be told unless you try for yourself.
