If it is a gull could be the great black-backed gull which as the name implies is jet black across the back and the upper part of the wing. this is resident on most of the Scottish coast.
The lesser black-backed gull is more grey-black and is a summer visitor.
Gulls change their plumage according to their age and the season so their is a bewildering variety. Could a completely different kind of black and white bird.

Apparently they are found in the Middle east and Africa regions. Gods knows why they are in Edinburgh. Perhaps visiting for the Festival :-)
