A volcano that is no longer active and will never be again, is called a dead volcano.

Dormant means, it's still active but not spewing out ash or lava at the moment. It could at ANY time.

The term extinct, when referring to a volcano is rediculous.

Extinct would mean there are no active volcanos on earth, ANYWHERE.
Since THAT isn't true, the statement is rediculous.

If there ever comes a point, where there were no active or dormant volcanos ANYWHERE, that is when the term extinct
would apply. Volcanoes would not exist ANYWHERE.

For example: If a Bald Eagle dies, that does not mean they're extinct.
There are plenty of more Bald Eagles.

I hope this answered your question.

Volcanoes are classified as extinct, dormant, or active.

An extinct volcano is a volcano that is not now erupting and is not likely to erupt in the future. Kohala has not erupted for 60,000 years and will probably not erupt again.

A dormant volcano is a volcano that is not now erupting but has erupted in historic time, since written records were kept (the last 200 years in Hawaii), and is likely to do so in the future. Mauna Kea has not erupted in historic time but is expected to erupt again in the future. There is no precise distinction between an active and dormant volcano. Because some volcanoes remain inactive for thousands of years between eruptions, it can be difficult to distinguish between an active and a dormant volcano. Volcanologists at the Smithsonian Institution estimate that 1,500 volcanoes worldwide have the potential of erupting.

An active volcano is a volcano that is erupting or is expected to do so in the near future. Kilauea volcano has erupted from its summit and flank 63 times since 1790. Kilauea has been erupting continuously since January 3, 1983.

depends ( in some cases dormant volcanoes have come back to life ) the only definite dead one that i know of is Hawaii - since the crust is moving then each island is formed and then the next eruption is in a new location) and just to make a point there is no way to tell extinct from dormant since dormant volcanoes can possibly never erupt again and a shift in the crust could bring a dead one to life FURTHER POINT extinct means gone yet ray below says not likely ? we can only be POSITIVE about two states ERUPTING////NOT ERUPTING ( cept Hawaii as i mentioned )

They're either active (there's something going on right now), dormant (there's nothing going on at the surface, but it could happen) or extinct (dead).

dumb question really. dead and extinct with volcano's refer to the same thing, that their done erupting permanently. dormant means that they haven't/aren't going to erupt for awhile but may in the future.
